[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] 45-70 Posted by George on Feb 23 2005 Steve, Short answer on the 45-70- yes. Also, the financial end is legit.- those of us who have been there know. As far as any ONE gun/cartridge that does it all- no. Short range stopper- big bullet, good construction, doesn't have to be really fast but has to be fast enough to deliver energy, cause trauma and penetrate. Almost a "Catch 22" if trying to make that combination good for 200-250+ yards. The upper end of what some guides carry as the stopper is the 458 Lott. Big bullet, pretty fast so quite a bit of trauma- but the downside and there is always a down side- a ton of recoil. As far as your question about shot placement??? My guess is that a charging brown bear with head down and ears pinned back and coming really fast won't allow for much precise shot placement- somewhere in the "front part" may be about it? I know some guides who have a LOT of brown bear, and even some with polar bear experience from the good ole days, who use or have used everything from a 30-06, 300 Mag, 375, and bigger. With each swearing by a particular rifle/cartridge/bullet. So lots of opinions out there and each with some experience or logic to back it up. Another thing about the 45-70 with its modest velocity is that some of the "harder", tougher bullets will be great for penetration but may act kinda like a solid and not delivery much trauma or energy to the animal. Sheesh! always a trade off! Regardless, good luck in your adventure! Previous: Guide Gun romanc333 Feb 23 2005 Next: 45-70 Murphy Feb 22 2005 Message Thread:
