I am proficient with it out to a 100 yards offhand. I am working to pic up one of the 375 or 338's but the finances are a little short with me still buying other necessities for my trip coming up April 1st. I really am going to concentrate on taking clients that are archery hunters while my boss takes out the "gun" hunters. Being so close to the bears we will be hunting, i figured my 45-70 would suffice for closer engagements if a emergency situation would arise. Would you agree for 100yd shots and closer that this caliber would "do the job"? I totally agree with you on the finishing shots at longer distances for moose etc. But in the same nature most animals bed down after being shot making the search pretty eerie and bringing in the close quarters shots again. And from what I have read and seen you dont wanna stumble on a injured bear. I guess the main thing for me to ask is will this 45-70 do until i can get another rifle or should i go into panic mode?????
