270 Win
Posted by George on Feb 20 2005
Don't have much experience with really short barrels in larger cartridges but hit upon a combination a pazillion years ago that I could never top in my 270 Win.(22" barrel). Whether this will overcome much of the velocity loss???. The load is a slightly reduced version of the great Jack O'Connor 270 load. It's the common,  lighter bullet with a faster powder- that should help at least a little. The powder was never recommended for the 270 but O'Connor used it and I tried it and it turned out to be the most accurate in my rifle- so I never changed it and still use it today to hunt with. The reloading manuals list it usually at the faster end of the powders for the 270. So you might try it. The bullet I use is a 130 gr. Nosler Partition with a less-than-max load of IMR 4064. I'd reduce the load by the recommended 5-10% and start working up, checking for pressure as you go. Chamber dimension, throat length, case capacity, primer used, etc. can all increase pressures outside those listed. May or may not help but would be worth a try. Good Luck
