270 Powder
Posted by Murphy on Feb 19 2005
FBKShunter,

Yes....but you will never have a 270 again. Why 16.5"? Because 14" wasn't legal? In short barreled rifles a smaller case is better. A 7-08 will give higher velocities with 140 grain bullets than a 270 will with 130 grain bullets in an 18" barrel, The situation goes more in the 7-08 favor as the barrel gets shorter. But, yes your right about the powder burn. Faster burning powder also lessens the recoil in some situations. Sorry! I have an opinion on this and I shall express it because I can. Many will disagree with me but here goes. A hunting rifle of a caliber which burns 60 grains of powder, 270, 30-06 and bigger, should never have its barrel shorter than 20". And a rifle of the 308 class, should never be shorter than 18". NEVER!!  No advantage to it at all, all disadvantage. One of the problems we ran into years ago with the 11" barreled A-4 was a wimmpy caliber instead of the 223 we were used to. No penetration and tracectory of a 12 ga slug. I know many here do this but I don't understand why. What will you get hung up on with 20" that you wont get hung up on with 16.5". We buy powerful magnums and cut them to 16.5".!@#$%^???? I ran into a young man at one of the local ranges last summer while chronographing some of my loads. He had a new Remington wilderness rifle in 300 WSM that he had cut the barrel to 16.5". Muzzle blast was atrocious, so that got my attention. I asked; "why 16.5"? He said that is as short as the gunsmith would cut it. I asked; "Why not get a 308Win"? He said he wanted the extra velocity and flatter shooter. I offered to chronograph his loads. After instructing him to shoot the triangles, he fired some Winchester 180 grain ammo at 2546fps. I still have the tape from my chronograph. Then came the 150 grainers, different box but Winchester ammo, 2566 fps. I wrote it down and made notes about it in my 300 WSM loading sheets.  He said my chronograph was wrong. The gunsmith told him it wouldn't matter, it would be the same velocity.  Only one test. Doesn't prove much, but that's what I saw. Sorry to be so blunt, I'm sure you had your reasons for cutting the 270. What velocity are you getting from the new 270 short? Wear ear protection and good shootin'.
