338 Win Ammo
Posted by Murphy on Feb 13 2005
hunt4,

The Tikka is usually a very accurate rifle right out of the box.  You say you have two groups 3" apart, makes me think it's something other than ammo. I haven't fired factory ammo with Accubond but have hand loaded them and they were very good. I don't know about your experience with the 338 but heavier recoiling rifles are more dynamic and difficult to shoot from the bench. The lighter they are the more difficult they are to shoot. Are the groups vertical? Do you hold down on the fore end of the stock? How many rounds did you shoot? I guess I need more info. I would think the ammo is capable of better than 3 moa accuracy.  Trophy Bonded bullets are not known for their gilt edge accuracy, however. You're shooting at 100 yds? I would check the bedding screws to be sure they are tight and also make sure the scope is well mounted and of good quality. Just because a scope was mounted by "experts" at the store doesn't mean it's correct. The type of mounts can be a problem with heavier calibers. The Millett clamp on mounts are notorious for shaking loose. You didn't say, do the mounts go on the dovetail or are they screwed down to the receiver? Or, maybe you are using iron sights, in which case disregard the scope and mount comment. Sorry I'm not much help. Let me know more and keep shootin'.
