WSM throats
Posted by Murphy on Feb 11 2005
George,

You give good advice about bullet jump, etc. it takes patience and dedication sometimes. I've had a hold of two 270WSM, both win M70s and both had very long throats. I have in my notes that I was unable to touch the rifling with any 130gr bullet if it was in the case at all. I use a stoney point tool to check seating and was so surprised by it that I questioned the gauge. The gauge measurement was greater than the length of the case and the bullet combined.  Also had a Browning A bolt in 7 WSM and it was the same way. An overall length of 3.180" on the 7mm still did not contact the rifling. And, of course it wouldn't fit the magazine. Is this a trend with Win/Browning products to keep pressures down. Free bored so to speak? What is your experience with them? My one and only (factory) 300WSM a Tikka, had about .032" left when seated to magazine length. Which is about right for a comfortable hunting round. I would think a Kimber would would be close to SAAMI specs. A technique I have used and works fine is to size a case neck ever so slightly then seat abullet about 20 thousands into this case and chamber this round. As it contacts the rifling it will be pushed in to the contact depth. (plus or minus a little) There isn't any extra room in the magazine on the WSMs and I'd like to be able to find the rifling before the bullet leaves the case! Maybe I just had a couple of flukes, or maybe a problem with earlier guns. I wasn't able to use any of the Win/Brn guns because of the throats, I didn't even test for accuracy. I did get a Shilen 270 WSM made that out shoots any 270 Win every time. A very accurate gun. Out of some 200 rounds in three or five shot groups, every group was sub MOA. Some guns just shoot! I have several loads if Interested, but I've never tried this MagPro powder. Is that good? Good shootin'.
