Reloading equipment for beginner
Posted by Darreld Walton on Jan 26 2005
The RCBS kits are a real value.  I replaced my old setup with a new set about five years ago.  My first one was the old "Junior" press, and I really like the added leverage and versatility of the Rock Chucker, and use the Jr strictly for handgun rounds now.  Doubt that I'll ever wear either one out, and I've had the Jr for 35 years now.
Yes, at some point, you'll want to upgrade your scale.  The 5-0-5 that they supply with it is a good enough scale, but there are others out there that have better sensitivity and are easier to use.
I suggest that you pick up a good powder trickler when you get the kit.  The powder measure is a good one, but when using stick powders, they just won't throw a consistent charge, so I throw 'lite', and trickle up to weight in the pan on the scale.
You get one set of dies and a shell holder with the kit.  Not sure if the .338 is a 'standard' die set, but the '06 and .308 are, and they both use the same shellholder.
Somewhere along the line, you'll get tired of using the wet lube and pad, and cleaning them by hand.  Suggest you look, up front, at using some of the 'dry' lubes, and a tumbler or vibratory case cleaner.
You'll probably want to also pick up at least a couple extra primer pocket brushes, and probably ought to get a pack of depriming pins.
Whatever else you do, spring for the loading manuals appropriate to the brand of bullets you intend to use.
