The knockdown of an AR-15 is good for everything except a brownie. You do have to shoot moose in the head however! That requires practice and competence. My old eskimo buddies tell me they've used 22s and 223s for years for moose and caribou, but only head shots. It's nice to have just one firearm that I can hunt almost everything with,it's simpler. The AR-15 is very accurate with open sights to 350 yards. If you have great eyes, you can go to 450.The military has perfected this weapon over the last forty years. You have to stalk closer, but that's what being a good hunter is all about, skill. While you can easily mount a scope on an AR, the knockdown would be for coyotes, fox or smaller game past 100 yards or so. The 223 ammo I shoot is off the shelf 57 grain. The muzzle velocity is higher, but you need it that small bullet. The 223 has a real flat trajectory relative to heavier rounds like 338.Most of the shots I take are 100 yards or less, especially head shots. A heart shot on a moose is questionable.Alaska is rough on guns, the AR-15 has stood up to the punishment of boat and airplane travel and knocking through the brush.
