Ask some friends if they'd mind you trying out a gun or two (just to figure out what the gun feels like).  You probably know someone who has a 300WM, 338, etc.  Accuracy is key.  And if you cant practice to be accurate then it dont matter if you fire a cannon, the cannon will only kill what it hits.  
I was in the same boat about 3 years ago.  I bought 300WM, no regrets, I have taken moose, caribou, brown bear, and goat.
