tinkering is fun!
Posted by George on Jan 23 2005
Murphy, Tinkering and experience is the best teacher!... as long as a healthy dose of caution and patience goes along too. Funniest thing I ever did with the 8mm Rem happened while load testing for it. At the time I didn't have access to a regular shooting range but lived pretty close to some wide open public land- good place to shoot. I rigged my old jeep wagoneer so the tailgate acted as a bench to shoot off of. A five gallon bucket was perfect height for a seat. As usual I set the target stand out at 100, got the front rest and sand bags situated and touched one off. Plastic shards rained for what seemed like minutes! The muzzle blast from the 8mm disintegrated the left, rear tail light assembly- very expensive little lesson. Never did it with any other rifle I'd shot from there. Some time after finding the best load for that rifle with the right bullet, got the thing conquered I guess, I took the barrel off and re-barreled the action with a fairly heavy contour sporter in 375HH. Best shooting big gun I ever had or ever have shot- really an accurate marvel and easy to work up a load for. Stupidest thing I ever did was sell that rifle! I also sold the 8mm barrel to a co-worker and friend. He fit the 8mm barrel onto a long mag Rem action (identical action I used for the 375HH!). Now that's tinkering! Since then he's shot numerous elk with it and swears he's never seen anything better for that purpose. Now I'm tinkering again but with 45-70s and 45-110s- opposite end of the spectrum from the over-bore mags :):) what fun
