More 8mm...
Posted by Murphy on Jan 23 2005
George,

Thanks for the comment.  I agree completely. A good bullet, or the lack of it, can make or break any caliber. I have never owned one, but got to shoot one of a friends' rifles.  I bought dies and loaded for his rifle, maybe fired 30 or 40 shots through the thing, a Rem. KS, custom shop. A very nice shooter, as I recall, but I only have four different loads in my notebook. Your right, the 200 Partition is about the best for it over a caseful of RL-22. But, with good bullets, it is a perfect hybrid of the 300 Ultra and the 338 ultra. Or maybe the 300 and the 340 Wbys.  Oh, yeah I know about the case, I was trying to be funny. In the lower 48 the 7 STW was so popular for a while, (in the pre Ultra Mag era) and ammo or brass wasn't available. So I loaded many rounds for them and necked down 8mm Rem. brass for this smoker. Also made the 300 and 338 Arnold from this case as well as the 300 Jarrett. It seems brass was hard to move by the shops because no one owned a rifle, so it was a bargain. I once had a very nice custom pre-64 action in 375 JRS, (a so called improved H&H) and I used up my supply of 8mm brass for this jewell. I could also fire 375 H&H in this chamber with good results. No, I still don't know why I ever sold it!!! I think I am still in the tinkering phase, I don't think I can do anything else.  Always gotta have a project!! It's a headache but I enjoy it. But it's like everything else, you can't get good help.... I am looking for an assistant.  Someone posted a note about Winchesters clever attempt to re-instate an 8mm, calling it the 325 WSM.  Noteworthy, but I don't forsee a deep path to the their door for this one, either. I necked up the first piece of WSM brass I ever found to 338. Have a set of Redding dies still for that, bought a chambering reamer, put a Shilen barrel on an FN mauser action and shot it until I was ashamed of myself. I thought that would be the next WSM but, guess not!!  Anyway I have a bunch of loading data for that if anyone needs some. Thanks for the post, I enjoyed it, good shootin'.
