[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] for Murphy, 8mm Rem. Posted by George on Jan 23 2005 Murphy, Back in my tinkering days with the big mags I owned an 8mm Rem. Really a great cartridge that was probably 20 years ahead of its time. The factory loadings from Remington did push the bullets to published specs but the bullets used were terrible- conventional jacketed bullets that, because of the high impact velocities, came apart on game. I too had trouble finding a good loading recipe for it as many of the gun writers of the time were saying. Between the poor bullets (many just 8mm Mauser types!) and the difficulty in finding the best powder for such a long mag cartridge the thing kind of fizzled. What's interesting now though is the re-birth of similar big mags in different calibers. At that time the best load I worked up was based on the 200 gr Nosler Partition and IMR 4350 powder. A little milder than the factory specs but very accurate and safe pressures! Looks like Remington also realized their booboo in that their factory loading for the 8mm is NOT the fragile bullets they used to load but now is the excellent 200 gr Swift A Frame. So there is no reason it wouldn't work great for moose, elk, African Antelope, etc. When I had the gun I shot large game with both the 185 gr Remington Factory load and my reloaded 200 gr Nosler Partition. The 185 gr Factory loaded bullet performance was absolutely terrible!! The 200 gr Nosler Partition performance was excellent! Oh BTW- the 8mm Rem is a blown out, necked down 375 HH-- not based on the 7mm STW:):) Next: More 8mm... Murphy Jan 23 2005 Message Thread:
