Hello,
This is one of those eternal questions that will be answered differently by everybody. So of course I have to chip I my .02.
One gun? Easy, .338WM. Handles both ends of the spectrum well. If you hand load you can really expand its usefulness. I prefer to carry a gun based on what I might run into vice what I’m hunting.
The statements about placement and how well you can shoot (and how often you practice) are absolutely right on. In an imperfect world though I prefer to start some where on the heavier bullet/ bigger hole side.
At reasonable ranges the .375 270 grain, .338 225 grain and 30-06 180 grain are all ballistic pretty close. It’s the energy delivered at the end that differs.
As far as recoil goes, it is as much (or more) a function of rifle weight and stock design as it is caliber. My .270 hurts a lot more to shoot off the bench than my .375. I is very lightweight and has a pretty, but unforgiving inlaid metal butt plate. If you are recoil sensitive get a heavier rifle, add a decelerator pad, get it ported etc etc. If you still flinch, take up bow hunting (kidding). You should be able to get some of your buddies to let you try out various makes and calibers prior to settling on one for you.
One point most will agree on though is that the real answer is nobody should have to live with just one rifle!
Now lets discuss controlled feed vice push feed, or Ford-Chevy-Dodge, or inflatables or any other topic we all agree on!
Good luck,
Dave
