If your response is a 243 or 270 to hunt whitetails, a 338 is going to be a serious wake up call when off the bench and usually creates a very serious flinch in field shooting. If you were using a 7Mag or 06 with heavy bullets to hunt elk then a 338 is not a horrible transition. Many new hunters to AK go buy a stainless steel cannon with which they are incompentent in field conditions. Shot placement and good bullets are far more important issues than velocity, energy figures or trajectory charts.
