Like you said, everyone has different opinions.  If you're looking for "concrete" facts, you're likely to come up empty.  That being said, take a look at those guns recommended most often on here.  30-06, .300, .300mag all seem to have devotees.

Personally, I have used a 30-06 on all of the species you mention above with success.  I now use a 7mm-Rem. mag. for sheep and caribou since it's a flatter shooting cartridge, but I have always been pleased with my 30-06.
