I've heard of people being arrested for trying to get a handgun accross the border.  Thinking because you got bad info you could get away with it is highly advised against!

You don't need an FFL for instate shipments, you can mail the guns to yourself, or to a friend, so long as you stay within the state.

I also recall that Canada's minimum barrel length requirement for shotguns is different then in the US, but I don't recall if it is 18 or 20".
