Long gun permit applied for
Posted by Ennis on Jan 13 2005
I've filled out a Canadian "non-resident firearm declaration" for 3 non-restricted long guns. I don't have to use it. I just wanted to begin getting the process in gear, should I want to. I'll double check with the Canadian consulate and speak with someone at my entry port just prior to leaving. I'm glad to hear that we won't seem under dressed without our bandoliers. When you take off for a long trip out of a van, space is at a premium. A lot like living onboard a boat.

I always used to have some kind of gun when I travelled. Then it just became too much of a hassle and worry than it was worth. I miss having my .22 along to stop out in the desert and spend a short time plinking. The world was a simpler place then. Last year I had asked in a town where it was okay to shoot. I was directed to a non working quarry. There was enough brass around that I knew I was in the right place (I always police my brass). In about 20 minutes three patrol cars, one from the Sheriffs dept and two Highway patrol, came pulling in. Someone had seen somene shooting with a "handgun" and phoned it in. Turned out the one of the State troopers was a competitive shooter. He stayed around and we shot together for an hour. The folks around there used the quarry to sight in rifles. Handguns were for terrorists and bank robbers.

We will mostly be day hiking and camping. We may rent a canoe for a few days and take off down a river. We will visit family in Sitka and Anchorage.

I think your comment about folks still seeing Alaskans as living on the old frontier is dead right. In part because we hope that somewhere the frontier still exists and it makes just visiting a minor act of heroism.
