[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] gun etiquette Posted by Bill S. on Jan 13 2005 AKHunter45 summed it well. You will probably see people on remoter trails with handguns or shotguns. Its not that unusual. In 7 years I have not seen anyone, besides police, carrying a weapon around town. Pepper spray is good although there are people that are against it. Probably the best defense weapon for bears, if you feel you need one on some of your hikes, is a 12ga short barrel pump shotgun. Check the state's web site under Dept. of Public Safety for the rules for nonresidents carrying weapons and Alaska's rules about carrying concealed weapons.
