[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] 300 RUM Posted by Murphy on Jan 13 2005 I have a comment about the Remington 300 Ultra. For what it's worth, a nickle maybe. I have some experience with the caliber, not hunting just shooting and working loads for it. I do think the 300 will achieve some level of popularity and ammo availability will get better. Like the Weatherby it will always have a limited following. It is a very capable hunting round, but so few hunters can shoot it well. It's forte is long shots on animals where 180 to 200 grain 30 caliber bullets are called for. It is some 350 fps faster than the 30-06 with 180 and 200 grain bullets. A gain in velocity of about 15%. It produces these impressive ballistics with some 60% more powder than the 30-06. Not very efficient but if that's what you want, who cares. As I said I have no experience with it hunting, I've only heard reports from hunters and observers about its performance in the field. It is quite effective if the shooter can make a good shot at 400+ yards but of course that's where the difficulty is. If you can shoot it, you have a slayer of great beasts. You must only use strongly built bullets. At high impact velocities, bullets tend to disintegrate on impact. Only TBBC or A-frame. Nosler PT, Speer GS and Kodiak for smaller animals, Caribou and smaller. I hand loaded and fired 720 rounds through 3 different rifles in the 300 Ultra Mag. For the purpose of developing loads for my book. I used eleven different bullets and four different powders. I burnt some ten pounds of powder in this 3 month long exercise, and I will tell you, I have no warm spot in my heart for this beast. I don't honestly think it fills a need in the arsenal of the american hunter. (Or any hunter) I would not suggest it for the faint of heart or the average hunter. If you shoot it well, I tip my hat to you, I do better work with something that burns less powder. Enjoy your rifle and good shootin'.
