You can get across but you may want to go south out of Kake and put your boat in at Little Hamilton Island.  There is an LTF and boat ramp there.  From there you can go down the Kupreanof side until you feel good about getting across.  If you go down Rocky Pass you can get to several good places to hunt bears on Kuiu.  Rocky Pass can be kind of fun during the tide change so be careful.  They call it Rocky Pass for a reason.  Jim
