money for the local economy
Posted by northwestalska on May 04 2006
As usual you bring a good sense of the bigger picture to an important issue Marten. This is the reason this forum is such a great tool. We all can chime in on the issues that effect us and we have an interest in. I am not trying to push anything but because I live here I think it important to pass along the local perspective so we can all be aware of this issue, it is becoming a bigger deal every year in NW Alaska.

I have a buddy on the BOG and the feel is that we may need to go to a game check and tagging system in the hubs much like they have in the lower 48. The idea is to make everyone, local or visitor more responsible when it comes to where is the meat. Is this what we need? Once again I donít know but we need to talk about it because there needs to be and will be changes in the way hunting is handled out here.

All of the strings/comments talk around the local non-local issue and how ďlocalĒ politics play too large of a part in game management decisions.  Letís face it, we do not have a dept of fish and game that is free to manage the resource with out dealing with the wants of who ever is our governor, just look at wolf control issues and what a mess it has become. Yes the needs of the locals are taken into consideration but letís understand the Native population in rural Alaska should have a large input into how game is managed in rural Alaska.

Great comments guys and donít feel shy about putting your 2 cents into the mix, we all have a vested interest no matter where we live or hunt.
