down bag ? - Marc

I have a question for you.  I know that syn bags have come a long way & get lighter & better every year & are the optimal choice.
However that of the two bags I own one is down.  In the last 5 yrs I have used it on two float trips North of coldfoot in Aug/Sept & two sheep hunts in the Wrangells that both turned into monsoons. The reason I keep using it is the size & weight & warmth. Also coupled to the fact I can't afford to buy new gear every year to replace items that still work fine.
Obviously I know my warmth depends greatly on my ability to keep the bag dry so I take extreme care in making sure I do this when in the field.
Do you think an over bag would work with a down bag? In theory it should keep it dry from condensation in the tent & if it adds 10 degrees or so it seem like this would be a viable option to keep using down bags.
I know the bag will still absorb some moisture as there is no getting around that, but if you have one or two nice days every so often it will dry out.  Now I wouldn’t recommend that people buy down bags for hunting trips up here in fact I would recommend just the opposite. But as an option for someone like Bruce who already has a down bag wouldn’t it seem like good insurance & little more warmth?
