One can get those infections from bears, seals, and other animals. Alaska Natives who hunt seals know about what the call "seal hands," which is a type of infection similar to bear hands. I once saw some photos of a guy who's hand looked like a small baseball glove. The hand was swollen and shiny like it was dying. He almost lost the hand.
