Bill Smoke
Posted by JDM on Apr 26 2006
I also knew Bill and the family when he was flying for logging camps out of Juneau in the early 90's. Got to re-meet him a couple of times on the Penninsula while guiding down there. It is a tragic loss for all Alaskan's as Bill was the kind of guy we would all want to fly with and the type of person that the Federal Fish & Wildlife people need working and training others. My heart and prayers go out to his wife Janis and their children..teenagers now...
People have spoken recently on this post of ethics, and Bill was a man of ethics and safety in the highest degree. I am sorry that his life ended in this way and feel that Alaska has lost a geat man, husband, father, mentor and trainer. This incident should serve all of us as a reminder that our time on earth is short and unpredictable, no matter how qualified, experienced or knowledgable we may be...make every moment count and take nothing for granted. Invest your time and talents in others, teaching them to love and respect this same Alaska that we all write about on this post so that when you (we) are gone they too will have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor lifestyles that we have been so blessed with.
