Montana elk cartridge...
Posted by Jeff L on Apr 25 2006
jet driver I assume you mean the bullet itself,if not then there are several companies that make premium big-game cartridges for the 300 WSM. Mature bull elk are tough critters and can soak up lead without showing a hard hit. Although bullets and calibers are a hotly debated topic I would submit that you should try to have a combination that does not marginalize your chance of making a clean kill even if something goes wrong. Nosler Partition,Barnes Triple-Shock,Barnes MRX,Swift A-Frame,Trophy-Bonded Bear Claw are some of the tougher bullets in factory loadings. Nosler also custom loads for the WSM and I hear they are great. I can personally attest to a Partitions effectiveness after having witnessed several bulls go down with 1 shot from a 270 Winchester. I have started to handload my personal elk rifle(.338WM)with BarnesTriple Shocks and amazed at the accuracy but have not tested them on game. Several guys on this forum have shot stuff bigger and meaner than an elk and speak highly of the Barnes XXX. Get a box of your top 3 choices and see what your rifle shoots the most accurately, then buy a couple boxes of the same lot # and shoot straight! Good Luck! Jeff L
