Additional info on WIld Kobuk River Runners
Posted by Michael Strahan on Apr 22 2006
I agree!  Joe Jackson runs a class outfit up there.  Joe is an Alaska native, and a 737-200 pilot for Alaska Airlines when he's not taking care of hunters up on the Kobuk.  He's a licensed transporter, and as Walt mentioned, does boat-based drop-offs upriver.  He doesn't go up to Walker Lake though, and my recommendation is that you put in below Walker anyway.  You're looking at a Class IV canyon in that area and unless you know what you're doing in whitewater, you're going to be a pinball, bouncing around from rock to rock through there.  Joe can drop you below the canyon.

He prefers to do airplane dropoffs via float plane, but if the weather is down, he'll run you upriver in his jet boat, with all your gear.  This hunt can be cheaper than most fly-out hunts, because you float downriver to his cabins at the village of Kobuk (you don't have to charter for your pickup!).

The name of the parent company is Harry O. Brown Trading, but Joe's outfit (and the one you were asking about) is Wild Kobuk River Runners.  Their website URL is < >.  Their phone number is (907) 345-5956 or (cell) (907) 360-2412.  I've known Joe for many years and just spent a half hour with him yesterday at the Fairbanks Outdoor Show.  He knows his area well and is a huge believer in good customer service.  You won't be sorry if you hunt with them!

Best Regards,
