Bugs in the Brooks Range
Posted by danattherock on Mar 31 2006
I went on a canoe trip on the Kelly River, one of the Noatak Rivers tributaries about 80 miles north of Kotzebue, two years ago. We were there in the middle of August and didnt see the first bug. I dont know if it was a fluke year or what. We did walk about a mile across the tundra to get to the river and didnt see any there either. All I can report is what we saw. No bugs. Aug 16-23. If I were you, I would call the Alaska Fish and Game Dept in the town closest to where you are going and ask them. They get asked that all the time and will tell you the facts. Alot of their offices are seasonal so you may need to search online and find an email address and send them your question that way.If you do decide to take bug wear, there is a website called Bugshirt.com that sells very nice bug shirts with built in hoods. They also make some camo stuff for hunters as well. As far as repellent goes, the only choice is Ben's. You can get it at Cabelas. I was in Kotzebue for 6 mos and noticed that Ben's was the only brand they even sold in town. Its good stuff. Small bottles, pricey, but very potent. 100% deet. It will destroy a plastic watch band. I learned that the hard way. Good luck.
