season for bugs?
Posted by Alaskacanoe on Mar 31 2006
last week when I was sitting next to Spencer Glacier on my snowmachine (3-22-06), my partner slapped a mosquito that was on the attack. We were sitting on a glacier on our sno goes and we had bugs.???..
The Tundra offers great insulation to the bugs, and last year out at Wood river lakes, we had ice on the ponds and snow on the ground, but as soon as it warmed to above 30 degrees,,  here they came.. My pilot was nervous that the lake would feeze so he could not come and get us in late September. I told him on the Satelite Phone that If we still had White Socks and Mosquitos, I was sure the lake would not freeze..
the next morning the lake was still and shinny.....
That afternoon we ended our late fall hunt early when I called in the Beaver to get us out while we had the chance. The lake thawed enough during the day and we swatted bugs as we loaded the plane and headed out...  Don't you love it when the white socks crawl up your pants and bite you around the sock or boot line?, or right at the cuff line on your shirt or coat?.. I have had mosquitos bite me thru the head net when the mesh got within a inch of my skin... pretty long needle on that one I guess... he may have been the one that landed at the airforce base near Fairbanks on the airstrip.. the crew had 100 gallons of fuel pumped into her before the guy cleaning the windshield realized it wasn't an F-14...
