Bugs in August

I am planning on my first bou hunt north of the Brooks Range. Everyone says the bugs are really bad. My question is what kinds of bugs are up there. Are they biting one or just ones that bug you, how big are they, are they misquitos(sp) or flies. Can someone who has spent some time up there help me to prepare. Thanks for your help.
