Boot FIT - Cabeles, Lowa, etc - HELP PLEASE!!!
Posted by Bill in Pa on Mar 29 2006
My question in in regards to "FIT".  I struggle finding shoes/boots and in  particular and prone to ankle, upper heel blisters due to bone build-up and narrow heels (but need room in the toe box).  I have a Dall sheep hunt in August, and need to find the right boot ASAP.  Local stores have limited selection and so far little to offer in terms of advice.  Ordering a bunch of boots from zappos or REI and sending the ones that don't fit back is an option, although at $200-$250/boot this is a lot to play around with.  Local Cabelas carries only the "Perfekt" boots which is fine for the local deer hunters but I suspect not adequate for the rocks/shale I'm likely to encounter.

How do the Alaska by Mendel boots "fit"?  In particular, I am looking at the uninsulated "Hiker" versus the "Hunter" to keep from "pruning" which leads to blisters for me.  I have read the posts reg the Cabelas Mendel boot and understand the problems some have had with durability. To be honest, I am leery of Cabelas-branded boots, having had a Danner model cause the same problems in the Wrangell's back in 02.

Has anybody had similar experiences and found a workable solution (other then custom boots) with maybe a suitable Asolo, Vasque, La Sportiva  or Lowa (like the Tahoe or Tibet GTX))?

I'm willing to compromise a bit on the stiffness of the sole, as long as the boot fits, is water-proof (Gor-Tex) and has preferably has a rubber rand.  Oh, I'll be carrying a ~40lb backpack too).

Am I the only one out there that struggles with boots more then any other piece of gear?

Thanks for any and all suggestions!
