Sticking with my first answer
Posted by twodux on Mar 01 2006
I'm sticking with my first answer. With a good rest, I'll take a head on neck shot any time. It's an instant kill shot which is what my goal is when hunting. I will take a chest shot if it presents it's self, but at 50 yards I consider a neck shot a more efficient shot. They drop, and they don't move.

I know my gun and my abilities and it is every hunter's responsibility to do the same. Personally, I take the majority of my game at under 100 yards, probably 75% or more. I'd guess that 95% is taken at less than 150 yards. And the only reason I might take a shot over 200 yards is if it's an already wounded animal, but because I limit the range of my first shots, that is rarely an issue.

Michael, here's a question for you. If you think a 50 yard straight on neck shot is unethical, at what range would you consider any shot unethical?

I stressed time at the range when I gave my first answer and I still do. That in my mind is the ethical point. Know your gun and abilities and find out if your gun is even zero'd before you get out in the field. Then take only shots that you have confidence in hitting what you shoot at.
