advisory committees

OK, Mark, since your confused lets do some education.
Ad comm members are supposed to be residents of the area. The comm I'm on is the Northen Norton Sound Ad Comm. It is made up of members from the villages in northen Norton Sound. Yes, I would say that ad comm's do know best about their areas. Not only do the members reside in the area, they get public input at the meetings. They may also hear from the public anytime. People often speak to me and other members, on our own time, about fish and wildlife issues in this area. As to commenting on other areas.........no, I don't think it would make sense for a comm, such as the one I'm on, to comment on an issue say, in your area, all the way across the state. I realize that isn't always the way it is, and on occaision, there could be issues that tie ad comm's that are far apart. Salmon migration on the Yukon R. would be an example of an issue that could tie several ad comm's together.
In general, I would say, Yes, if an ad comm proposes something, people in other parts of the state should respect that. Hopefully, any proposal from an ad comm would be well researched, have F&G support, and be the result of public input from that area also.
I've watched, and participated in this states management system for a long time. I like the way it works. I like the way that the folks who care most about the resource are the ones who take the time to participate.
This same system is being expanded upon with help from the feds. We now have what are called "groups" that help make decisions on wildlife issues. In my area there is the Western Arctic Caribou Herd working group, and a Musk Ox Cooperators group. These groups are composed of members from the villages and people effected by the species, such as commercial operators. They meet periodically and help set policy, both at the state and federal level, concerning managing the animals and the people.
Can you think of any reasons we shouldn't respect the work of our neighbors?
