Oct hunt
Posted by TBinKodiak on Mar 01 2006
Sal,

The higher up you land the more likely you are to get weathered out/in. October is "usually" worse for weather than September, were talking delays up to a week or more that high. There are not many days that they can fly into Shotgun/Crown Mt lake, so the lower you go the better your chances of flying are. The first week of Oct would be about the latest I would fly in that high. Contrary to popular belief there aren't many deer in the high alpine on this end of the island. Most deer are in the 800-1500 foot range, right on the edge of where the low brush ends and the alpine begins. A lot of the bears will be coming off the salmon streams around the end of Sept and can be anywhere.
I went into 471 from the salt a couple years ago over Labor Day weekend. Saw 11 bears, all on the salmon stream we hiked up. I shot a 9.75" billy with great hair. The difference in length of hair from the first week of Sept to the first week in Oct will be about an inch. The goats here never get the real short hair you see in some areas like BC or the lower 48. My billy has a beautiful cape and I had great weather on that hunt. You weigh the benefits, go earlier and have longer, nicer days or go later for an extra inch of hair. Just being honest since you said you wanted your wife to "enjoy" the hunt. Me? if I get drawn again I will go late Oct for a long haired rug. Then again I already have one on so I can afford to be choosey.
Good luck with whatever decision you make.
