Meat Care
Posted by sal on Mar 01 2006
Interesting concerning the hide...guess I won't ned to worry about the blood.
I've never done the meat in the water deal and am a little apprehensive about it.  41 years old, been hunting since I was a kid and it's hard to break that "keep ALL water away from the meat" mentality.  If I do it, do I need to keep it in the water for the duration?  Once the meat has cooled down, don't I have to keep it that temp until it goes in the freezer?  How am I gonna do till I get back home to Eagle River?  Just wondering.
I'm still trying to get ahold of a buddy who went up there last year in early October with a friend and took two nannies.  Supposedly they were both 11".  They had to land in the salt water and hike up to the lake.  They were flown out at the lake (the one to the South) and didn't mention any bears, but did say deer was a distinct possibility.

Please keep the comments coming.

Soooo ADF&G expects you to rumage around in a bear kill site digging for "edible meat" to recover?  I plan on taking the meat and cape down in one trip, so hopefully that won't be a problem.

The bear deal is primarily the wife's concern.  I've only had one really spooky bear encounter, but that's another story.  Happened on the Kokwok River.  But then I've never hunted Kodiak before.

Considering the possibility of getting weathered in or out of the lakes, should I then opt for the more Southern lake/lakes?  Is the area as good as the Crown Mtn Lake?

I'd really like to go later since I've heard that the hide quality is so much better.  What's the general timing for winter hide for goats?
