Unless you know for sure that you're in the middle of a large tract of State or Federal land it is almost essential nowadays to have at least a "General Land Status Map", these maps can be purchased by making a phone call to the Alaska State DNR Support Services in Juneau.  They show state, federal and private lands at a scale of about 1/2" per six miles (townships are shown as 1/2" squares).  Make sure that you get the most recent edition, I'm currently using 2003, there may be newer maps.  The status of land ownership is changing frequently.
