Low-percentage shots
Posted by Michael Strahan on Feb 28 2006
AJ,
You don't take a low-percentage shot simply because "you don't think you'll get a better shot" unless you're in a survival situation. It's these sorts of "obligations" that end up with wounded game. A front-on shot doesn't leave a lot to aim at in most cases.
Shooting "through the sternum" or "just under the sternum" will net you nothing but air, since the sternum is mostly parallel to the ground, and the lowest part of the chest. Unless, of course, you find yourself in the unlikely position of being UNDER the animal! I think you mean shooting at the center of the chest in an attempt to hit the heart or lung area. As the heart is a very small target, I would advise against aiming for it in this situation. There are just too many places for a bullet to go besides the intended target. Same goes for a neck / spine shot in most cases. Natually if you sever the electrical lines (the spinal cord), the animal is going down. But it's too risky a shot to advise folks to take it, in my opinion.
Let the animal go and take a better shot another day.
