Kodiak Goat Hunt
Posted by sal on Feb 28 2006
The wife drew DG472 for the Crown Mountain area.  Now I'm planning a his and her hunt up there and have a few questions.  This will be her second big game hunt, and both of ours first goat hunt...we're really looking forward to it and have already started the workout routine to get in shape.  We're planning on flying into one of the Alpine Lakes.
I was thinking on going the first week of October for around a 7 day hunt, mainly due to the hide probably being better at that time and partly due to work schedule.  I've been reading everything I can about Goat hunting.  I've been hunting big game since I was 13 and up here in Alaska since 1989.  Actually shot my first Caribou at Cold Bay way back in 1979.  Oh...I'm taking the .338 and she's taking her 30-06.

With all that in mind, here's what I'm wondering:

1.  Should we fly into the the lake at the base of Crown Mtn or into the lake/lakes South of there closer to Hidden Basin?

2.  I'm thinking we'll also have an opportunity to take a Blacktail or two...am I wrong?  I figured the bucks would still be up high at that time.

3.  How will the bear situation be up there?  The wife is more concerned than me.  SOP is to run a clean camp and take the normal precautions.  I figured most of them would still be down on the rivers feeding on Salmon.

4.  I've never done the bone out thing in the field but instead have always left it on the bone.  What are some of the things to look out for when boning in the field? Moving the pieces within the bags daily?

5.  Should I bring salt for the cape/capes?  How much?

6.  If no trees up there, what's the best way to hang/store the meat?  On top of cut brush pile and then tarp?

7.  Is it O.K. to wash the blood off the cape in a creek or the lake?  If so do you air dry after?

Lots of questions and after reading this it sounds like I'm a Cheechako but actually I just want to make sure the wife has a good experience.  Plus I never really have cared about trophies before.  I've always been more of a meat hunter and out there for the experience.

Thanks for any and all responses.
Sincerely,

Your friendly Alaska Air Guard SAR dude.
