Most are essentially floated except for a "bridge" of wood at the extreme tip of the forend.  Floating often involves little more than removing the bridge and cleaning the barrel channel, then resealing.  I don't bother unless accuracy is suffering or there is clear evidence of stock warpage.

A bigger issue with recoil is the inletting around the angled front action screw.  If the action settles back a little after lots of rounds, it can come into contact with that screw.  When that happens accuracy usually goes out the window, and no amount of barrel bedding work will help.  The solution is easy:  Merely open the hole through the stock slightly with a rattail file, then reseal.  I've picked up several Rugers over the years with "shot out barrels" at bargain prices.  So long as a wood butcher hasn't hogged out the barrel channel in an ugly "free floating" job, about 30 seconds with a rattail file has restored the rifles to their original accuracy.
