Wolves and wolverines
Posted by B_M on Feb 27 2006
Well, I posted this info below, but I'll add it in here too.

Wolves:  I'd have to think long and hard to come up with a precise number on this one, but I'm guessing I've seen something like 15 in my years of hunting.  6 of those were in one pack a few years ago in the Kenai Mountains.  I came across a den.  I shot one at about 15 yards (honestly!), and then all heck broke loose.  I only thought there was one other wolf there, but soon there were 5 others running in all directions.  In the craziness of the moment I didn't get any other clean shots off, but it sure was a cool experience.  That's the only one I've shot, though I almost got one with a bow this year in the Brooks (right next to the road while approaching Atigun Pass.)  He happened to look backwards right as I was drawing my bow.  1 second more and I would have had him.  Oh well...

Wolverine - I've seen one while on a sheep hunt in the eastern Chugach.  He was running and I only caught a couple of glimpses.  It didn't even cross my mind to shoot (I was quite far away), but I wouldn't have been able to anyways.  Again, just a cool experience to see one.

(I've also see two lynx, another of the rarely seen species.)

-Brian
