10mm energy
Posted by GunsmithRob on Feb 27 2006
Look at some ballistics tables and ask your buddy if he'd consider shooting a brown bear with a .243 Win.? There were guys that carried .45ACP for bear back-up but I haven't heard of anyone doing it lately. I think it was a case of using what was available. Given the choice, a revolver's much more dependable and able to handle more energy. If he's buying a gun and it has to be an auto he should look at Wildey, LAR Grizzly and Magnum Research for some serious energy. However, if the 10mm is what he's got, it's better than beating on a bear with his fists. That's how I feel about my .44 too. Thinking that a 10mm (or .44 mag for that matter) will adequately dispatch a  PO'd brown bear is just niave and disrespectful of what these animals are capable of, on a Timmy Treadwell scale.
