Mike,

Good to see you jump in. I suppose you saw the proposal by Frank. I wonder if the board will approve same-day aerial hunts this time? I don't know how much a grizz hide would go for, not many huge bears in 20E really and it would seem like the claws would be worth more than the hide. Not sure if there is loophole in the reg that if you tan the hide with claws on if you can then sell the claws separately. I don't envision this allowance to sell the hide bringing all that many hunters out there. Lots of work in skinning and fleshing a bear hide, and probably has to cost several hundred for tanning and shipping etc. In the end, I think this will just backfire on hunters and make us look bad. It'll make the national news...urbanites will raise a stink etc. Personally, it ticks me off to no end that people need an "incentive" to get off their lazy butts and put their quads and time and effort into taking care of what they say is a problem. "I don't have the time" or "I can't get out and trap like other guys cuz I work five days a week" or "I just can't afford to go bear hunting unless there is something in it for me" etc etc etc. So we get all these AK urbanites complaining there are too many wolves and bears out where they want to hunt, and for something to be done, and it ends up that guys like Leif and others spend boocou bucks and risk their very lives and their airplanes shooting wolves, in essence taking on the responsibility and expense for everyone else. That ain't right. Not to mention I really don't like to see wolves shot from the air, and if you talk with some trappers who live out that way they are ticked too cuz guess what---it's cutting into their livelihood when they were part of the guys taking 35% of the wolf population annually and busting their butts out on the trail in the cold etc.in a time-honored legal method that has always flown under the radar.. Ironic, eh...that the trappers themselves don't care for it. At least the ones I talk to.

I dunno. It isn't just the atvs that will be a problem from all this Intensive managment stuff. It will be the overall crowding, confrontations in the field, wanton waste, all of that. If where I live ever becomes an IM area, that's it...I'm moving <grin>.
Best, Mark
