baiting
Posted by northway on Feb 02 2006
I get tired of hearing that crap about how baiting leads animals to bad habits. I have been black bear baiting for years and we have NOT had one problem with bears after I quit baiting. I just don't buy it. Maybe in to more populated areas, but out here in rural AK, it isn't a problem. Fact is, there are SELDOM any bears located at the open dump here. I have never seen one that comes in a and feeds everyday. Fact is, they are seldom seen even around the dump.
Secondly, I guess I must be one of those idolent individuals that doesn't identify with wildlife. Yeah, what a bunch of crap that is. Ask my daughters about animals in their natural habitat. We spend hours watching bears interact on the bait. You are telling me that that interaction isn't normal? When a big boar comes in and chases off the others smaller bears, that is not normal? When a boar and sow come in together, that isn't normal? When we are sitting there listening to just the birds sing, ruffed grouse drumming, swans trumpeting, and ducks quacking, squirrels chasing each other, a porcupine walk by, a black bear climb up the stand with us, that isn't anything in their natural habitat?????? There is much more to baiting than just dumping a bag of garbage out and watching a bear rip it open and feed on any food. That is the picture that some hunters that don't like baiting try to show and it is a bunch of crap! It is much more than that to me and my kids. It is the opportunity to spend time with my kids, to teach them about nature and lastly to make a kill if so desired. We have spent countless hours sitting on stands checking out many bears. We can select any one we like to shoot. Most of the time, we may kill 1 out of 20 that we see. Please don't criticize me for something you don't like. I may not like a method of hunting that you use, but I am more than likely to support it as I have an open mind. I ask you, how have you helped moose, cariou, or sheep populations except for the fact that you harvest your animal? How many bears or wolves have you taken out of the population? Baiting is a viable and "ethical" way of hunting whether you like it or not. Don't try to compare it to sitting at a dump, because it is much more than that.
The pictures that most Americans get is the crap that is in Walt Denali NP! That is a joke! That is a glorified zoo! Tell me a place where wolves lay in the road and bears walk along with the bus? That is a joke in my book. There is nothing natural going on there at all. That is a prime example of nature that is humanized!
