It Will Be Interesting
Posted by Mark on Feb 01 2006
I'm one of the people who, for the past three years, has been sending written comment supporting this and other BOG proposals to allow conditional sale of brown bear pelts (in addition to several other proposals regarding bear control). I'm not sure exactly which proposal passed, or how it will be written into regulation.

I wonder how many here supporting or opposing the proposal bothered to send in their comment?

Unit 20E has been under intensive bear management strategy for over 10 years now, and liberalized regulations didn't result in either increased hunting pressure or harvest.

This is a careful, measured experiment by the Department and the Board. Only one subunit is being experimented with (with regard to brown bears, anyway), and it will be carefully monitored.

Success or failure will be determined if:

1) More resident hunters go there,
2) Baiting works on the brownies, and
3) The harvest increases.

Here's my predictions:

1) There will be only one spring season for this, because environmental lawyers will eventually find a favorable judge to shut it down,
2) That single season will result in an increased harvest of brown bears
3) There will be incessant whining on this forum regarding hunting pressure
4) The market for the brown bear hides will be very profitable
5) The Department and Board will recognize this strategy as a wonderful management tool
6) And a new management/political battleground will result similar to the long-running wolf control battle
