14C Sheep vs. Delta/Tok
Posted by B_M on Jan 31 2006
Alright, it's only 10 more months until I can put in for another round of sheep tags (I'm trying to console myself by thinking this), so I have a question.  For those of you who put in for the Delta and Tok Management Area sheep hunts - why do you prefer these hunts to the 14C hunts?  I understand that the drawing rates are slightly higher for these hunts, but what are your other reasons?

I've always put in for three 14C tags, and have been successful twice.  I keep putting in for these hunts for a few reasons.  First, I live in the area, so scouting during June and July is easier than if I had to drive 6+ hours.  Secondly, I can do these hunts as a walk-in, whereas I know many people fly out on the Tok and Delta hunts (with the exception of the non-motorized hunt).  Third, and most importantly, I know these mountains very well.  I spend a great deal of my summer out hiking and climbing, often in the area covered by the 14C tags.

All of that being said, I'm starting to think I might diversify my permit applications.  I'd love to try a new area, but I need to justify it to myself.  Also, well, I just want to think sheep hunting right now, and after my abysmal draw results this topic came to mind to bring me comfort.

So what do you guys think?  Why do you prefer the Delta and Tok hunts to the 14C hunts?  Thanks!

-Brian
