...plus, i guess it goes in layers of safety and defense
1) common sense and constant awareness with no weapon is the minimum basic layer.
2) then at least have a big bowie type knife (poke in eye or mouth)
3) then, have a 44 magnum (i'd have this and the knife at least)
4) better yet, have one of those new Ruger Alaskans, .454 Casull
5) best yet, have your rifle or shotgun with slugs...personally i like the guide gn, 45/70...it'll produce 50% more TKO at 100 yards than a 44 magnum at muzzle (Garrett loads)  and a little more at 100 yards than the casull.454 at muzzle.  Keep him away or drop him at 100 yards will keep you mighty safe.

If you happen to get or be real unlucky and he gets within 20 yards of you, getting past your common sense AND 100 yard range layers, you may still drop him with your rifle or shotgn....if he's on you, go to the handgn, unload it...then to the knife.
The more layers you have, the safer you'll be...T. Treadwell ultimately had no layers...he became complacent and even let his basic layer slip...his common sense.
