game farms

I've subscribed to Big Buck Magazine for a couple years because they have some of the best photography around and not too many advertisements. But this summer along with my magazine came a slick brochure for an outfit called Aspen Ridge Deer Ranch. At first I thought it was no big deal, just a place to go for guided deer hunts, but a picture on the brochure caught my attention, and I thought about the name a little more and decided to check their web site out. Bingo.....it's a deer Ranch (or what they call a closed herd) where deer are raised as farm animals and shot behind high fences. I wouldn't be surprised if they use automatic feeders to get them out where they can be shot.

The deer all have names and are entered in competions like cows at the fair. One of the quotes at the site is "Our goal is to produce wide, heavy framed antlers with five points or greater to the side.  These racks look good and are what we think our industry will demand in the future.

We also feel that as producers will will have to produce a large proportion of bucks in the 165+ category.  A 150 mature buck, while a marketable product, will not command the price of a 165.

As a producer the production costs are identical for both animals while the end return may be double or triple for the high scoring buck.  Our goal is to have 70% of our production bucks mature in the 165+ category."

You contact them, tell them what animal it is you want to shoot and they'll then tell you the price. Feel free to check out their web site at www.saskwhitetaildeer.com to see for yourself.

Here's another quote "The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Zoo provided the source of our stock.  This Zoo always used a superior buck on their does and augmented their genetics from orphaned fawns from the surrounding area.  Surplus animals were sold to other zoos.  With an estimated 60% of antler characteristics originating from the mothers, we were very fortunate to secure this great base to start with."

and another "Aspen Ridge Deer Ranch has does, fawns, breeding and hunt bucks for sale. " They sure do. I'm just curious how people at this site feel about these so called hunts and shooting tame animals, with names, that can't get away. Is this what is becoming of hunting? If it is, I'm going to join tha antis because I think this is BS.

I'm writing to Big Buck Mag to tell them if they continue a relationship with this outfit and any others like it, they can cancel my subscription.
