If as you say your Grandfather intentionally offset the trail by a few feet (though I have reservations about this) then wouldn't the berm, boulders and the gate be blocking the original easement?  From what I've read this was an old wagon/pack horse trail and I doubt it was as straight as the roads currently in there for obvious reasons.  After all the subdivision came generations after the trail....Makes ya wonder if perhaps the developers straightened out the trail when they made an actual road, and thus the "offset" appearance you refer to.
