Spin...Spin..Spin....
Posted by AlaskaHippie on Jan 21 2006
I'm sorry if you feel that these "allegations" are unwarranted but having been on the receiving end of them and having witnessed the behavior it has left a bad taste in my mouth.
This IS a 2 way street and I am certain that abuses and less than ethical/legal acitivities that occur in there are shared by both those with and those without key's.  As you state you have 100's of people with key's, and we all know there are always bad apples in any bunch.  I don't know you OR AK357, so I refuse to attribute the activities I've spoken of at either of you directly, I am speaking from experience on this and not looking to lump everyone from EITHER side into one category.
I have no ulterior motive when it comes to this issue other then to be left alone when I am doing nothing illegal.  I do not hunt in there due to the fact that there IS a sizeable amount of Private Property. All I am doing is chasing fish around with a fly-rod and to have to feel like I am gearing up for a fight with unreasonable people when I go in there sure does detract from the experience.
As to your continued assertion that you "own" the "developed trail",
improving a trail with machinery that has existed for well over 100 years is not developing it.  You believe you are right, I believe you are wrong, I doubt we're going to resolve that and I am willing to concede that point.  As to it being hard to ride a bike, yup, it sure is.  BUT if ya enter via the Mail Trail in mid summer when it's dry it IS rideable for a good distance in some spots, when it's not I carry the bike..As I referred to doing in a previous post.
Your statement that: "I have no idea what F&G says about the gate, nor do I care what F&G says about a private property issue.."
Seems highly suspect as well as arrogant.  But I'll let it speak for itself without further comment.  I also have spoken with the troopers and they have told me that as long as I am NOT defacing the trail or destroying private property, and as long as I have adhered to the rules as posted by DNR/BLM and all other agencies then I have nothing to worry about.  Care to tell me how many "trespassers" have been arrested, cited,or convicted for using the trail?  NONE to my knowledge. It's used as a scare tactic, plain and simple.
I don't feel the need to "ask permission" to use a public access area, and I have always been respectful to others in there...Up until they change that feeling by their actions.  I've had bad experiences with a number of people in there before and feel that since they claim to "own" it all there is no need to, as you put it "Bring the problem to us" on the contrary, it seems you (the collective "you" not you personally) continue to bring the problem to me.
When I have console my wife after she has been threatened and seen me threatened for doing nothing besides pursuing some fish with a pole, then a line has been crossed and I feel no need to try and "communicate" with people who participated, condoned, allowed or encouraged this type of behavior by handing out a key to, as you put it, relative strangers who asked for it nicely.  Handing them a key is one thing...encouraging them to "police" your property is another can of worms that hold huge consequences for ALL involved.
I'm by no means "hiding" in the shadows as you put it.  I have an Email link here as you do, though I see neither of you key holders have contacted me...  I have not hidden here,on the trail, or at the river.
It just astounds me the contemptous attitude held by some who think blocking off historic access routes and then "deputizing" strangers with a key is rational and responsible behavior.  Sorry if you feel this has "attacked" you in some manner, but what is going on in there is wrong on many levels ... and I fear what will happens when, not if, the wrong combination of events transpire on that trail..All over a fish.  Sad really, for all involved.  I understand there is property in there and you should by all means use it in any legal way you care to.  But to try and lock up thousands of acres of land as well as a river all under the guise of "Hey, it's my driveway" is a stretch.
I don't think "resentment" is the word that covers how I feel, but if thats how you see it, so be it.
Good luck in there on your bear stand and I hope AK357 DOES thin down the Brownies, it's gettin so a guy needs eye's in the back of his head in there for more reasons then one.
