[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] kashwitna Posted by viktor on Jan 21 2006 Well I have read all of this about the Kashwitna. I have fished that area for over 25 years. To be honest there is fault in many varieties. I walked in all the way and i was confronted at the river, and told to get the he-- out. I was on the san bar in the pool below the confluence. I was flabbergasted as i had walke in through the woods and not driven. Yes we all had guns and yes i had my dog with me and yes the other people were drinking. I was mad but decided to go home. I researched and found a way to the river without crossing their property it is long and tiring but can be done, but i choose not to because i fish to relax and not argue with people. On the flip side i have picked up trash and moved down falls trying to be helpful. I have seen people throwing rocks at the kings and i found a net with a carton of salmon eggs in it tied in the river. I have seen people destroying the trail by gunning their full size trucks. It was only 15 years ago that you would not find a foot print in the sand there. Alas it is sad to say that it is now a nightmare there. I do not like to be threatened when i am in a river not bothering anyone. I take it personal. As far as people destroying the trail and ripping down the gate i can understand why the Wards would be upset. There should be a way to find a balance. Maybe fish and game making the area all non motorized? Maybe closing it to fishing? Or maybe people just respecting each other on both sides, eliminating the threats before someone gets hurt. Or maybe just bringing the whole mess to a court room and find out the true rights of everyone on both sides. Right now it is just a scrambled testosterone filled mess. I would love to be able to stand on a rock and fish after i hiked in with out worrying about how mad i will possibly get when my life is threatened by someone saying "you better leave before you go for a swim" Indeed this is a life threat as the waters in may are very cold and you could die. What is one to do? call the troopers, record statements? argue? fight? Or just walk away and say it is a sad day in Alaska. Previous: Threat?
