My bear attack
Posted by Ken R on Jan 20 2006
I had a sow come right through a slug from my shotgun at 5 feet and ended up on top of me.  I managed to load another one and shot her point blank in the chest while she was holding my leg in her teeth.  I got one more in her at about 10 feet (in the butt though).  She ran into the brush after that.  So, while I still won't go into known brownie territory without my pump shotgun, I don't have any illusions that slugs will drop them in their tracks nor that I will have the presence of mind to point, aim for the skull, and fire one into the brainbox.  Incidentally, I found the sow just inside the brush line and did the obligatory skinning the next day while a trooper stood over my shoulder (never lifted a finger to the guy on crutches).  Anyway, I don't think anyone should have illusions that when a bear charges at 40 yards that any weapon will stop them in their tracks unless the bullet finds its way into the brain/spine.  I will be the first to admit that I was lucky enough to even hit the bear and not sure how many of us have the presence of mind when the time comes to really take their time to aim for and hit the head or spine of a charging grizzly.
